I paid just over $80. for my female.
I picked her up at Petco. I know of another pet shop in Buffalo MN. that sells thier balls for about $100.

Yes, females are generally larger.

Petstores usually charge more than if you bought one right from a dealer. Try a reptile show. I paid $70 for mine at a petstore. Another one charges $150! Most likely the ones at petstores are wild caught. You want to buy a captive bred Ball Python and ask to see it eat - you'll thank yourself later.

Where do you live? Can't recommend a petshop w/o knowing where you're at.

I wouldn't go with a ceramic heater - they dry the air out causing humidity problems. BPs need belly heat - use a reptile under the tank heating pad or a human heating pad.

I have a caresheet I can email you - just drop me a note:

Not familiar with your state, but here's some herp societies I found that might be of interest:

www.kingsnake.com
http://norcalherp.com/index.html
www.kingsnake.com
http://www.nbherps.org/
www.kingsnake.com

Check out their sites. You might find some breeders or at least some reptile show dates, etc. I personally say forgo the petshop and find a good breeder. That way you know you're getting captive bred and will avoid many problems. Some breeders even feed their snakes frozen/thawed which will save you the trouble of trying to convert.

The Sutherlands are in California and I hear nothing but great things about them: ballpython.com/page.php

The best place for a beginner to get their first BP is from a reputable breeder. Pay a few bucks more and know what you are buying. If that does not work check into whether or not your area has a herp club, they should be able to hook you up with something. If there is a show in your area also check it out, there you can meet the person you are buying from and see the BP you are buying first hand.

A forty watt heat element will give you forty watts of heat!
