Brachylophus Fasciatus (Fiji Banded Iguana)

Icarus Apr 19, 2004 09:03 PM

Hi,

I've recently seen a picture of these magnificent lizards, but would like to get some information on the subspecies. There's a couple sources on that I've found - but this ssp seems to be a less available one (correct me if wrong).

The pictures I've seen suggest a generally smaller subspecie of iguana, but then again, pictures can be very misleading (they could have been juveniles, resting on very large branches, standing next to enourmous people - okay, I'm kidding about that last one). I've had collareds and bearded dragons, but am looking for an arboreal lizard. The traditional green iguana may reach sizes that are slightly too large for me to handle.

Aside from size, I've seen that general care requirements are roughly equivalent to those of iguana iguana.

If anyone has experience, direct or indirect, with this subspecies, any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

you cannot own these lizards because they are very endangered and on the verge of extinction. if youw ant a smaller species of iguana you could try a spiny tail iguana.. and there may bea few others that ica nt think of. i dont really deal with any other kinds of iguana besides green iguanas so im not much help. why would you say that green iguanas get to a size that youc ant handle? i think they are very handable.

Thanks,

Yeah, I was doing some more research and quickly found that the word "endangered" was included in alot of the Fiji Banded literature. Poor guys.

Oh, and I meant "handle" as in "me... personally being able to handle" as in "not sure I want a big lizard." Unless I'm mistaken, green iguanas can get pretty big and I'm not sure that I can meet their requirements.

Try checking with the reptile house at the san deigo zoo. I do know they have a pair.

As Mike said they are extremely endangered and not currently found in the pet trade.
