Re: What kind of snake is this?

Kammer1 Apr 19, 2004 09:19 PM

Hey I found a baby snake about a few days to a week old, I live in Natchez, Mississippi. The snake was blackish with a yellow ring around its neck and a yellowish under belly. Do you know what it might be? And if so is it poisonish? Where we live its mostly oak trees, weeds, wooded area. We have no ponds.
Thank you

Ringneck snake (diadophis punctatus). Eat mostly invertebrates and small vertebrates (small frogs/salamanders). They are harmless to people. Pretty little snakes, always nice to see.

Sounds like Diadophis punctatus stictogenys. I also live in mississippi and stictogenys is the subspecies we have here.

I doubt it was a baby ringneck snake. A baby ringneck is only 3-4 inches long and as slender as a piece of spaghetti.

Even as an adult, an average Mississippi Ringneck would only be 12 inches long and the diameter of a pencil.

Hey are you sure It can not be a ringneck, it was about 3-4 inches long and about the size of your pinky finger or smaller.
Everyone that has replied to my question said they thought it was a ringneck.
Thank you Amanda
