Spots in Northern, Ca (Sacramento) to go herping / road cruising

mkeck24 Apr 19, 2004 10:51 PM

What's up guys? I'm a long time reptile enthusiast from Sacramento,Ca and was wondering if there was any good spots to herp in the area. I go to the American River Parkway and hit up spots in the Folsom Lake Area but I haven't been seeing many snakes lately. Anyone have some decent spots? Some road cruising spots would be excellent!

What kind of snakes are you looking for around Sacramento?

mkeck24 Apr 22, 2004 03:45 AM

Looking primarily for rattlesnakes. I have been herping the last 2 nights....one place out off of white rock (someone was there before me), and out at Folsom Lake (Beales Point & Granite Bay) and havent found a single snake of any species. Lots of lizards, frogs, toads, and centipedes though.

Where do u know of?

I've seen hundreds of crotes' in the Whiterock area and never needed to go out to Beals Point to find them, but assume they're pletiful out there, as well. Just be persistent. Road-hunting season is right around the corner if it's too late to flip them now. Good luck!

I wen tout there the other day on white rock...right by aerojet...and I didnt see a damn thing except for some skinks and centipedes. Someone hit that spot up and flipped everything and didnt put [bleep] back where it belongs. You know any other fields out there where there is a lot of wood/tin laying around ta flip? At least I'll put it back the damn right way

...and saw about a dozen crotes, a couple of Lampropeltis, and a few Thamnophis elegans there when I last visited in late March (I'm now living in Texas) but it's probably too late to flip anything out there now. I would just start road hunting once it really starts to heat up next month. I worked in Folsom for a couple of years and used to hit that area several times a week on the way home from work. You could pretty much bet money on seeing Crotalus every time. Just stick with it.

What roads were you hitting up out there?

... and that's White Rock. Really, there's no magic out there and I've seen just as many snakes on Prairie City, Scott, and even Sunrise despite the high traffic there. No real secrets to it. Just stick with it and you will see them.
