Corns sexing

cornsnake234 Apr 19, 2004 11:45 PM

Hi everyone!!!
This weekend i get my two corns to a vet for sexing.

I posted pic of my corns tails in this forum in febuary and you all said it was females... and that was my opinion too and what i was wishing! ... and.... THEY ARE FEMALES!!!

but i have some questions about probing... in september, my first corn was probed, and the girl who did it was very good and experimented. She desinfected the probe before to use it and also after, and uses a lubricant before to insert it into the snake. But, this weekend, the guy didn't use any lubricant and didn't desinfected the probe before and... between each snakes i think.

Can it be dangerous for my snakes!? i told him that normaly he should use lubricant but he told me it was ok without. And also, can my snakes contract sexual diseases!?!? im a little bit worried about that, i hope it won't cause any probleme for breeding...

Thanks

I stink at sexing baby corns! The scare me to death, I am a Boa breeder by nature and the baby corns just seem so small to be probed, even with the smallest probes. I try sexing by popping but that is very unreliable. I have been probing snakes for years but just can't get past the tiny corn snake baby thing. Anyone else have this issue or am I bound to end up in therapy over this LOL.
Thanks

Those are some great points. I was thinking of posting this question this morning when I saw this post. Maybe one of the more experienced can answer these questions. My question is how big do you let your corns get before they are big enough to probe? I've got the hang of popping but want to probe to make sure. Thanks, Jim

I no longer worry about sexing my corns snakes. I pick out my keepers based soley on the looks and I don't even worry about sexing them until they are old enough to breed. Then they tell me what sex they are by their actions with other snakes. Once they are about a year old I can tell by the tails if they are boys or girls. 2 years ago I only kept 4 of my own corns as future breeders, this year when they were old enough to breed I found that I had 3.1 combo, I used the males for breeding and let the female take another year to grow. Last year I kept 9 of the babies, I still have not bothers to see what sex they are, next breeding seaon I will look and see and then I can decide if I have extra males to sell. My problem is with folks that want my babies, I really stink at trying to get them a sexed pair and by the time the realized I got one of them wrong, they are already attached to the snake, so I feel like a maroon for getting it wrong to start with. I no longer sell sexed baby corns, just in group lots at low prices so they can sex them theirselves and sell the rest.
I just curious what others do?

Dont ever let that guy probe for you again. If he probed something sick or diseased before he probed yours you could be in big trouble. If i saw anyone sexing a snake without lube i would be on him likes flies on rice.I use lightly applied neosporin as a lube just in case i get to probe happy.I also scrub them down with listerine and hand dry before i probe another snake.Keep an eye on your snakes for awhile...Paul.

Thx for the answer!!!
That was also what i was thinking but it is better to hear it from someone experienced in probing.

This guy will for sure never probe my snakes again. I think it could be a good thing for me to purchase my own probing kit and to try to do it myself, maybe someone with experience could show me how to do....

You can get a set of probes online from about any reptile supplier. If you decide to go it alone just be gentle.Probes are about 97% accurate. There are always snakes that can fool you.If and when you probe email me and i will give you my number and help you thru it...Paul
