A beautiful day in the desert(1)

EJ Apr 19, 2004 11:59 PM

It was actually cool out which made the day fantastic. There wasn't alot moving but there was enough to make it interesting.
This was one very cooperative Desert iguana.

The Banded Rock Lizards are a pain to try and get a good picture of but I was satisfied with the way this came out.

I was actually trying to find a Leopard Lizard because I don't have any decent pictures of the animal. I was lucky enough to stumble onto this guy.

When the male took off he led me to a bush where I found this female Leopard Lizard.

I found these catapillars feeding on this shrub. I have no idea what kind they are but they did look neat.

Those are sphinx moth catipillars. Last year in Anza Borrego there were thousands of them all over the place.

Herper Apr 24, 2004 02:47 AM

You must have been near Borrego Springs. Those caterpillers were on EVERYTHING a couple weeks ago when the desert was in full bloom. They ate it all!

While I missed the main flower bloom by about 2 weeks there was still enough to provide a nice display of remaining flowers and tons of butterflys.

Nice shots Ed! I spent all of Saturday herping and ended up with 0.0 snakes, 0.0 amphibians, and probably 999.999 Brown Anoles. That seems to be about the only reptile we have around here. We do have Gopher Tortoises though which are always a joy to watch. Keep the pics coming. Brooks

P.S. The fishing is great- the Pompano and Sheepshead are as common as the Anoles.

Now sheepshead are little turds. Whenever I catch them, I always can see after fileting that they were the ones stealing my bait all day. But hey, they beat hardheads.

Isn't it amazing what you can do with digital? I took a bunch of shots with 35mm and was surprised to see that they came out better than the digital.
What kind of camera are you shooting with.
The whiptail that I have a picture of was too fast for my digital camera except for when it rested.
It kept running under a rock that was right in front of my feet. At one point a little head poked out from the sand between my toes and the rock. It then darted out of the sand with a male in hot persuit. He proceeded to do what you got pictures of but it all happened so unexpectedly and so quick I couldn't get off one shot. The 35mm with the powerwinder was, of course, back at the car. That really sucked.
