Cypress Bedding As Substrate, OK from garden center?

Dr_Bones Apr 20, 2004 12:00 AM

I was wondering whether or not it is ok to use cypress mulch bought from a garden center/nursary as opposed to the expensive stuff they sell at pet stores. Is it the same stuff? If not anyone know of any other places or names of products that are cheaper and in larger quanities?

the mulch they sell in the pet stores isn't cypress. it is a mixture of mulch, dirt, and dust. ive seen BUGS crawling around inside the bag. the stuff at the garden center if in bags is WAY better than anything at the pet store.

Bones-
I use landscaping cypress mulch on a regular basis. My only complaints are that its pretty varied in texture and size of pieces... you'll have to watch for sharp slivers and sticks. Also, I'd never use it without a good rinsing and a bake out in the oven to kill anything that may be living in it. That being said, at $2.50-$3.00 for a huge bag, its well worth it.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys, been very helpful. I went out and bought some cypress mulch from a garden center. It is premium grade A cypress mulch from florida. the only thing though is that it has a very strong smell to it. I dont know if this is normal or not. The stuff hasn't been dried yet so I'm hoping the smell will go after I dry it. Please let me know if this is normal. Im just afraid there is something in it that will kill my animals.

Many Thanks,

Dr_Bones
