A cool book ! - The King Snake

Keith Hillson Apr 20, 2004 08:38 AM

I saw this book on ebay a couple of years ago but the bidding got out of hand so I didnt get it. Its from 1968 and written by Allan W. Eckert and is somewhat of a collectors item due to scarcity as is written on the web, but they are out there. I'll cut and paste what the book is about here as well. If you get a chance buy it its been reprinted in softcover as well and you can get it from the kingsnake.com book store. I ts a very entertaining read plus its about an Eastern Kingsnak so how can you go wrong lol. Ive included a scan of the the copy I just got yesterday as well.

Book Description
A very special young adult nature novel about the life and adventures in survival of a North Carolina king snake, from the time of his hatching until he becomes adult. The story shows the way he lives, how he catches and eats his prey (including other snakes, even poisonous ones), his value in the balance of nature and the fascinating events of his life, shedding new light and understanding about the lives of snakes, which, despite their value to man, are so often misunderstood and deliberately killed just because of what they are or what they are perceived to be.

I'm always looking for anything that might help the reputation of the wonderful animals that are in my keep. This book sounds like it will be a fun read and present the Kingsnake in a sympathetic posture. Educating others is a large part of keeping snakes and a responsibility that I eagerly undertake. I'm so glad you posted the info. Thanks.

Wow! That brings back some memories. I read that when I was a kid. It is good, from what I remember. But be warned, there's a scary part where the snake gets grabbed by a hawk! LOL.

I think there was a close call with a hawk, but the big battle was with an owl...anyway, a great book. Made me bug my parents take me to Hermosa Reptile, probably around '71 or '72 to get a snake. Of course, all I could afford was a garter snake...

the one on amazon is a new edition. Can't tell if it has the same illustrations as the original, they really made the book.

There are some used copies of the old hardback edition on there as well.

I read that in junior high. It is a great book. I'm 47 now. It must have been new when I read it.

I read that book in Jr. High School in 1971.
