Firebellly newt not eating

ccr0323 Apr 20, 2004 09:12 AM

I just got a chinese firebelly newt on Friday, and he hasn't eaten yet. I've offered him frozen and freeze dried bloodworms. I'm sure some of this is stress, and know that they don't have to eat every day, but how long can he go without eating before it being cause for concern? He's about 7.5 inches from snout to the base of his tail.

Are you sure he's a chinese fire belly? 7.5 inches is awful big!

As for his eating. . . keep in mind that this is somewhat a lesson in patience. I would offer a little bit of food once daily and providing he is healthy, the instinct to eat will prevail.

You might also try feeding him something a little different that might spark his interest. . . such a small crickets, or baby earth worms (found in a garden and fed whole) or you could dig up (or buy) the larger bait earth worms and chop them up for your newt.

Good luck and keep us posted!
