Very nice animals and a nice pic.

Have you ever had any problems feeding on aspen? Does it concern you if they ingest any of the substrate? Any other thoughts on this issue?

Thanks,

Joel

Hey Finn. I always worry a bit about feeding on aspen, but I've never had any serious problems. Every now and again I have to remove a bit of aspen that gets stuck in the mouth, but it doesn't seem to be a big deal. In fact, I think in most cases the snake can get the aspen out without help. I know they ingest a bit of the stuff that is attached to the prey, but again, I've never had a problem. I've been keeping on average 15-25 adult snakes on aspen over the past 7 or 8 years, and have never had any problems associated with feeding on aspen. Babies stay on paper towels until they move to the "big kid" rack, and then they go on aspen from there on out. I've seen both the VPI and Snakekeeper videos, and they both feed on aspen. Is there anyone out there that has a verified illness or problem that arose from feeding on aspen??? JP
