Giant Leos are they a Simple Recessive?

magick-bears Apr 20, 2004 03:13 PM

Ok I am trying to get as much info on the Giants as I can. Up untill now I have been under the impression that they were a simple recessive gene. That being the case it would mean that they could, eventualy, be bred in all currant morphs.

However, after reading some of the posts on other Leo forums I am starting to wonder if this is in fact the case.

I have seen post stating that Ron Tremper has even said that a Giant RW PA would be almost imposable. Another post said that a breeder that had bread Giant x Giant produced non Giants in the offspring.

Before I make the investment (money, time, and emotional) into this morph I would like to hear those more involved with them opinions. Is the Giant a simple recessive or not?

Thanks,
Jeff

i would say its a simple recessive morph. because you can have het for giants. Also the reason why a rainwater giant PA would be almost impossible is because it is THREE simple recessive genes.
a triple het to a triple het breeding would result in THEORETICALLY......
1.5625% Giant Rainwater PA. so THEORETICALLY 1.6 out of every 100 from a triple het to triple het breeding will be Giant Rainwater PA

"Ok I am trying to get as much info on the Giants as I can."

Check out Ron Tremper's site www.leopardgecko.com . He's got a Giant FAQ (frequently asked questions), including ones that deals directly with the recessive genetics of the morph.

www.leopardgecko.com/giantfaq.html

I would trust Tremper's word over anything else I heard, especially from an anonymous person on the 'net. Tremper's got a 30 year reputation and he's not going to provide any erroneous information whatsoever just to sell some lizards.

I am in no way questioning Ron's reputation. Hell the first breeding colony of Leos I ever bought (way back in 1985) was from Ron. To this day those were some of the nicest Normales/High Yellows I have had or seen. That is why I will be getting my Giants from him directly.

But Ron is also known for being a promoter. After all how long has he been promising a Blue Albino. If anyone can pull this one off it is him, just wish he would hurry up and unvail one This is not a bad thing I am a marketing consultant myself. What I am saying is when I hear that a Giant x Giant produce normal hatchling (heard it from more then one sorce and one of them being a well known breeder) it makes me go hmmmmm

did you hear it from the person who it actually happned to? if they weren't simple recessive more than one person would be saying stuff, Ron wouldn't have it saying on his site if they weren't simple recessive.
