Beardie Coughing

JoeyP Jun 14, 2003 07:03 PM

Don't know how else to explain it other then coughing/sneezing? She puffs her beard slightly opens her mouth (like when gaping) and let's out a gasp of air that's audible across the room (not loud mind you, but it's audible). Anyways she has coccidia and I had just given her some meds. Is it possible for it to make it into her wind pipe, and she's tryting to cough it up. Can beardies even breath through their mouths? Anyways she's been doing it for about an hour and a half. She'll do it about 5 times over the course of two mins or so and then it stops for about 20 mins. Other then that she's acting pretty normal, even eating the occosianal cricket that walks by her.

from her mouth and any that may have stuck in her throat. They do not taste things like we do and she may be finding the meds "funny tasting" to her... and watered down gatorade will help her with hydration which the meds can affect. Most really like strawberry-kiwi flavor.

If she keeps this up or you hear a popping sound, she may have a upper respiratory infection..... its not uncommon for the coccidia to have run down their natural immune system. The coccidia meds she is taking is an anitbiotics, and should help a respiratory infection also, but discuss it with your Vet.

wheezing and audible breathing can be a sign of respiratory infection...how hot is it in her tank, and is she staying pretty dry? i guess that if she was already compromised with coccidia, it might be easy for her to pick up another infection on top of that. take her back to the vet for a post-exam exam!
