Tray with slightly moist vermiculite, eggs half buried, small dish with water, temp between 28.5c - 32c, humidity 70 -85%, 65 days incubation, red viens seen by 30days when candled. Whole tray covered by a sheet of acrylic with a small air gap, all then placed inside of the incubator.

Nice photo's.

Hi,

I am 18 for 20 in hatching out Russian Tortoises. And it looks like I might be 26 for 28 in a couple of weeks. I use a Hovabator incubator. The eggs are in a Rubbermaid container with vermiculite. There is a tray of water with a sponge in it also in the incubator. I incubate from 83-88 degrees. The humidity varies. My analog hydrometer says 75% and my digital one says 40%. What ever works I guess. I will post some more pics of my incubator setup and a baby hatching. Good luck on hatching out some Russians!!

This is my incubator with 8 Russian eggs. They all look good. This picture was taken when I first put the front 4 eggs in the incubator. They have since chalked over and started developing.

Oops!! Forgot to mention that. I mix a little bit of water with the vermiculite before I put the eggs in. It might be 1:1 but I have never weighed it. After that I just sprinkle water around the eggs when needed.

Have you ever had any crack unexpectedly before hatching? When I've gone that high with tortoise eggs in general I found there was a high occurance of eggs cracking.

The first time I got eggs, i put them in a Rubbermaid container with the lid on. That time they cracked, but since I don't use a lid now I haven't had any crack. And, like I said, I don't know the true humidity because I am getting two different readings from two different hydrometers. Would the digital or analog one be more accurate?
