mantella problem

ortega Apr 20, 2004 06:10 PM

I have three new mantellas. One of the 2 females has been trying to get out of her vivarium and has a sore nose. Should I do anything about this or will it heal on its own. She has seemed to stop now, but if she keeps on doing it should I put her in another tank?

I'd recomend seperating the frog with the rostral abrasion from the others as soon as you can. I've used triple antiobiotic ointments to help rostral abrasions on a few species of tree frogs but they are easy to hold on to and often you can just put a small smear on their nose while they are asleep. Mantella frogs are small and jumpy so restraining the little girl daily to put ointment on her nose would be difficult and probably counter-productive. The stress from being handled daily could easily push a mantella frog over the edge. You might want to get in contact with a veterinarian and see if you can get a hold of a liquid solution that will help prevent infection that you can just drop on her nose once a day with an eye dropper or syringe. At the least I'd recomend simply just seperating her from the others for a month or two. Good luck with it,

In Marc Staniszewski's excellent book on mantellas(highly recomended) he suggests taping paper to the glass until the frogs settle down, and get used to where the boundaries are
I really can't recomend this book enough for anyone keeping mantellas the ISBN is 3-930612-54-2.
