Recycling for second clutch question.....

Passport Apr 20, 2004 09:14 PM

Can a female kingsnake retain sperm from the first clutch and recycle for the second? Or should she be bred again soon after laying if a second clutch is desired? If bred again, do you wait until after the postlay shed? Or if she looks good after laying first clutch do you feed a couple times and put her in with the male for breeding? Not sure if I want to do this again this year but wondering if it's possible that she'll do it anyway? Thanks. You folks are the best!

Some snakes can retain sperm, but I have never seen this in a Kingsnake. If you want to try breeding her again feed her just about every day for the next week. Most of the time they will breed again about 10 days after she laid her first clutch. Good luck.

It is common for Cal Kings to double-clutch without the introduction of a male for the second time. Fertility is lower than the first clutch. If you want to double-clutch, then go ahead and feed as soon as the female will start to feed after the first clutch. If she goes into the blue right after laying the first clutch, then breed her immediately after her shed. Otherwise start to breed her right after (as soon as she starts to feed) she lays her eggs. She may look extremely thin after the first clutch so I would feed her 2x a week with multiple feedings of smaller items.

I would also recommend that you only do this on larger, older females.

Good luck
