I have had both c.b.b. and farmed (C.H. Imports). LikeGary says C.H. seem to do fine as long as they aren't bounced from vender to vender and show to show. Most of the chondros I've kept were c.h. and to date I still have no had a single problem. Sure everyone prefers c.b.b.! Anyways just my thoughts,
John
i own a farm raised import and i really dont see the diffence between this type of animal and an american captive breed animal..people confuse import and wild caught and often consider them two in the same..farm raised are breed and raised in the same conditions as many american breeders and the only difference i see are the stress caused by shipping the animal...if you buy an american captive breed animal,he will also have been subject to at least one trip in a box and in many cases many more..the farm raised snake i have is the best eater i have ever had and the only time i have ever had a snake die ,he was the product of a very well known american breeder( i will not name any names)and in this story the person who lost two snakes got his money back,i wish i could say that about the captive breed animal i lost, which in my opinion was way over priced...as far as losing animals,if green trees were not prone to many problems they would be considered a beginner snake..and another thing about that story...i do believe many people who repeatedly warn about buying imports, are only using a scare tactic to justify their unbelieveably high prices...i say again..my import is the best snake i have ever owned and the only snake i ever lost was a so called designer cbb...and as far as american breeders charging 1000's for so called designer snakes with super high yellows and such..id like to see one breeder put his money where his mouth is and guarantee that the babies they sell will display the aduly colors that they claim or your money back!!!..i have seen people pay thousands for so called high yellows or high blues to only be disapoined when their snake grows to look no different than a snake he could have paid only 300 for much more often than i have heard of people buying snakes from professional foreign breeders like bushmaster and having the snake die...and if it dies a refund is usually in order..in my case i was out 2500 bucks..again i will not name and names...i do believe there is a market for designer snakes but in my opinion that is where the true risk lies...even the breeders will tell you that there is no guarantee on the adult colors(isnt that what youre paying thousands for?)hell if all you wanted was a guarantee of a healthy snake ill offer right now to sell anyone a typical green tree for 3000 with a 2 year health guarantee..
You have to think what you are paying for. These "designer" animals have been bred line bred for a specific color trait. So hence you are paying for genetics and not the color of the animal it's self. It's a roll of the dice and if you do infact want a high yellow or high blue you can wait and spend 8 - 15k for a unique animal, or simply take your chances for a baby. Eitehr way the blood line is there. Jack Sandovnik's Golden Sky founder pairing is a great example this.
"Designer" chondros are not for the faint of heart or the barron pocket book. But these animals and offspring will usualy be more desiralbe than a w/c x w/c pairing. In my opinion the designers are much more fun to watch color change as your odds are much higher for getting something unique.
You should look for the post Kam (from bushmaster) made on the chondro forum.
