I have a Savannah Monitor that is 3'6" long and weighs 11 lbs. What should I feed him? How often should I feed him? Does he need calcium supplements? Thank you

Good luck with your monitor, you may also want to try the monitor forum, alot of experienced keepers there.

Thank you for the response. However the site doesn't say how often to feed and whether calcium supplements are required.

Any other suggestions?

Having many types of lizards myself, A young lizard I would feed every day, an older monitor, provided hes fed enough food at each feeding, could eat every other day!

They have hefty appetites, I can not do the mouse thing, feel bad, but I hear they can really eat alot of them,

I would still ask for advice on the monitor forum, as they could help with all aspects of his care!

As far a calcium all indoor reptiles should be supplimented with calcuim, young every day dust food. Adult at last 2-3 times per week.

My formulated opinion:

Calcium 1-2x per week on adult savannahs

Feed more greens than animal matter. Savannahs can suffer from obesity, which has virtually the same effects on them as in humans. It takes some time to get a good diet going because every monitor has their own personality.

Just feed more on the greens side, and if he/she loses weight, then more animal matter.
