New Nigerian Uro owner. Bellyup this morning with eyes open alive???

Think2000 Apr 21, 2004 08:04 AM

Two questions you can read my set up below, I have been feeding my uro orgaic collard greens and kale. He seems to be happy with it. Last night he fell asleep in his backing area but the ceramic heater was on in the opposite side of the tank. My room temp was 79'F so I moved him to a grape vine log under the heater. In the moring, I found he had fallen off and was upside down, legs sprawled, eyes open. I paniced and picked him up, and to my suprise, he was wiggling and moving like he aways did. I sat him under his daytime heating bulb on a lager surface area log, where he proceeded to look up at me without any indication of weakness or fatigue. I gave hime fresh veggies and immediatly joined this forum seeking some advice. Is this normal? Why was he playing dead, now he seems strong as ever. Please I love my new baby and researched him for years prior to buying one. I am new to the reptile community, but am a treefrog wiz.

I recently bought a uro and placed him in a 40 gallon breeder (18" by 36". I'm following all the rules but am confused about the substrate. Currently, I'm using ESU Reptile desert blend lizard mix. I was advised to mix allot of organic topsoil, ~7", into his bedding so he could burrow. I bought the topsoil but wanted to consult an expert before adding it to my tank. Your advice would really help me.

As far as your uro falling....I'd say he had a "I've fallen and I cant get up" day . I had one that did that often, however, she had other issues that made it hard to get herself turned over.

I wouldn't be too concerned, as long as he is acting normal in every other way. You may want to invest in a good, flat object of some sort for basking instead of the log. I don't know that it would get the temps up to where they should be for basking.

As far as the substrate, there are many threads going on as you may see as to what is best. Thats a personal decision you need to make. I like to use either millet or sand and it works fine for me. Others are getting into the soil mixes. I have not heard of what you are using so can't really comment on that.
