Breeding/Morph Question w/ Pics

silvano_06095 Apr 21, 2004 09:42 AM

Ok, what do you get when you cross.....

A Ghost male with a very odd pattern:

With a Reverse Okeetee female:

Any guesses?

-Ellen

PS: in case anyone is curious, both snakes were produced by Don Soderberg at South Mountain Reptiles.

Assuming you've no het genes hiding in either one...

You'll get normals th amel, anery, hypoA who possibly might have some of that odd pattern.

I agree w/Kat.

Male = hypo anery
Female = amel

Assuming female is not het for hypo or same anery strain as male, and male is not het for amel, babies will appear normal but be het for all 3 conditions. No comment on the aberrant pattern...(?)

This is from a clutch that was just supposed to be a Normal colored Striped x a Zigzag Ghost and look what happened LOL! With the hidden genetics in the corns snakes, the babies could be any color of the rainbow!

Dude! That's an awesome photo/clutch!!

Hoppy Apr 22, 2004 06:50 AM

That clutch is actually a generation or two later, but still from the same two paranets line. It seems that the parents were hets for all kinds of things that I never knew and no their offspring are producing clutches were all the babies are a different morph, it is insane but really cool! I have no idea of knowing what is going to pop out of the egg LOL. in the last couple of seasons I had added a few more genes to the mix, on purpose so I could get even more crazyness. I love breeding them because of the "whats next" factor, but it does make it hard to prodict what morphs you will have.
Thanks

Yeah! I really want to aquire some snakes that are het for all kinds of crazy stuff for the fun seeing what hatches (though I guess my current ones could be het for lots of stuff, never know, their first clutches are currently either being incubated or still developing in their moms! )
On the other hand, I'm trying to make sure I don't go into "collectors frenzy" and aquire more animals than I know what to do with. Being a small snake breeder someday sounds good though. But right now I'm just about to graduate college and will be moving a lot so... baby steps. Fortunately I have lots of snake friends who can board when I'm in transition... and help enable my addiction :D

1.4 assorted corns, 1.1 normal kenyans

I see so many young people, who once the get the freedom of being on their own, they tend to give into to every impulse and not always think things through. Slow and steady is the best way to go. Make sure what you want so you are not always trading for an "upgrade". I have been doing this for 22 years now, I have my house, my family, a good job and I a finacially secure, but even now I won't buy each and every morph I want. If I can't trade for it, I don't get it until I can. I won't charge up credit cards and go into debt for the latest Morphs (the Boa end of the hobby is much more expensive then the corn snake end of it LOL). I have built my collection over the years and only keep what I can care for and it sounds like you are on the right track!

Why thank you!
Yeah, I really like womas, but those guys are too much on the high end for me right now. I'll stick with corns and try to get my hobby self-sustaining for now
And yeah, I prefer to get into the expensive corn morphs (though not as crazy-expensive as, say, ball pythons!) by getting hets and breeding them myself. Seems less costly and more fun! I'm in the process of aquiring a pair of het butters someone needs to let go, and I might consider getting a pair of opal hets if a good deal came along. But that'd be it for the next year or so

Agg, every so often I have bad dreams where somehow my collection has gotten out of control and I have a bunch of sick/cramped/hungry animals that I'm frantically trying to get fed/properly housed/treated with limited supplies. And to make things even more difficult, my clothes usually keep falling off in those dreams too. Must avoid that in RL!

Silvergrin Apr 23, 2004 11:14 PM

Only trading for animals sounds like a great idea. I don't have enough animals to do that yet (well, maybe when my corns are finished laying and the eggs hatch!) but thanks for the idea. I'll keep it in mind if things work out in the future :D
