FEMALE CRESTED AGES

CRESTEDKYLE Apr 21, 2004 11:51 AM

HELLO!

i just bought two female tailess cresties at a reptile show to breed with my one 8 month old male...i have a couple questions though:

1) is there any way of figuring out a ball park or approximate age of my geckos?

2)is 8 months too young for my male to start breeding?
if so, what age should i wait til?

3)how long should i quarantine the females until i put the male in there cage?

4) lastly, is there any chance of the females killing the male if he is a little younger and smaller than them?

also, if you have any other advice on breeding or cohabitation, i would really appreciate it! thanks in advance!

>>1) is there any way of figuring out a ball park or approximate age of my geckos?

Nope. They grow at a rate dependant on how well they're fed. If it's that much of a concern, you can always ask the person you bought them from.

An 8 month old male is probably sexually mature.

>>3)how long should i quarantine the females until i put the male in there cage?

The same as you would quarantine any other species.

>>4) lastly, is there any chance of the females killing the male if he is a little younger and smaller than them?

Although I doubt they would kill him, the chance of a successful breeding is reduced when a young male is much smaller than the females. Once a male is in the 30-35 gram range, they should be able to handle themselves just fine with a larger female.

thanks for the info anthony.

this is the only species i keep as of right now and i'm relatively new to cresties so i do not know the usual quarantine period for new animals. i've been told 2 to 3 weeks, but i bought these new females from a very reliable company, so i was wondering if one week was sufficient.

what do you think?

thanks

The key word is "company". If you're getting animals from a pet store or a reptile dealer, you should definitely quarantine them. Even with the best of companies or stores, there are still a lot of reptiles coming in every day and there's no telling what diseases/parasites they may have been in contact with.

One week or even three weeks isn't going to be enough time for any problems to manifest themselves, so it's not even worth quarantining them if that's all you're going to do. The typical quarantine period at my place is 60-120 days.

To be honest, if all you have is three Cresteds, I probably wouldn't worry too much about it. In all likelihood, you're not going to have any problems.

About this quote...

"If you're getting animals from a pet store or a reptile dealer, you should definitely quarantine them."

This applies to anyone that really needs to be quarantine their animals. With you having a just a few Cresteds, it's really not much of an issue.
