Weird thing sticking out of my snakes vent...

superkase Apr 21, 2004 12:32 PM

My snake has a little problem. He's got this thing, sort of like a fibrous looking material, that peeks out of his vent a little bit. The area behind is vent is a little pink as well. He just shed, but he didnt have any problems with his shed in the vent area. He did just recover from a mild case of mouth rot. He doesn't seem to be sluggish or anything, he is acting normal. I don't know how relevent this is, but he is wild-caught and he has been fasting for the winter. I appreciate any responses. Sorry for the lack of a picture, but I couldn't get a good focus on the object.

do you have a scanner? that is how I got a good shot of what I thought was a problem with my snakes vent after her shed.
just put the snake on hold it down as best as possible and scan fast.

if this is an adult male it sounds like a sperm plug. I would try gently massaging upward from the tail to the cloaca. If it is a sperm plug this should pop it out of the hemipenes then you can just wipe it off. No harm to the animal. This would be my first guess if it is a sexually mature male. If not then can you give a little more description:

What color is it?
Is it hard to the touch?
Is it fleshy feeling to the touch?

It is a dark-brownish color. It is a little harder than his sclaes. I did forget to mention in the previous post that he suffered from a burn right after his previous shed, and this material does seem to resemble his scales after he was burned.

ok, it is gone... i think it was skin left over from his burn that had a hard time shedding. thanks for responding!
