male/female MATING BEHAVIOR???>>>>or MALE/MALE fighting behavior???

cv768 Apr 21, 2004 02:44 PM

Alright here's the scoop:

We've got a confirmed male. The "female" in which we put with him this afternoon we're not 100% sure of. To me it looks like a male (i'm no expert on beardies) to a breeder in town it looks like a female (he's probably a more reliable source).

anyway, the male chased down the "female" but not before they both did some head-bobbing and their beards turned a little bit black. The male continued by climbing up on top of the "female" he didn't bite "her" neck though. (maybe it's cause I was trying to watch?) He just kind of sat on "her" then walked off and proceeded a few more times with the same thing=chase, pin, on top, walk away, repeat.

Is this a sign that the "female" is not ready or could it be a sign of some male/male fighting?

any suggestions? opinions?

It could be a sign the female isn't ready. How big/old is she? It could also be inexperience on the males part. Males tend to be more aggressive shortly after brumation. With an inexperience male you may have to put them together several times before they will finally breed. You may also need to leave them together for a couple days. I only do this if they just won't get it done. Try taking a spotlight and shining it on the floor. Take them both out of their cage and put them together on the floor. Sometimes the female will drag the male around the room a couple times before they actual do the deed.

Good luck,

Mike

The male has never been bred and the female is about 60 grams smaller than the male so it could be a bit of both.
