Sam's Vet Visit

Becki71 Apr 21, 2004 03:38 PM

Well Sam saw his new vet. She seemed to know much more than his other one did. He definitly has stuff going on in his left lung still. She prescribed Amikacin since the baytril didn't seem to help. Since he is so small she said he can't have oral so we have to keep giving him shots which I am not happy about at all and I'm sure Sam will feel the same! Unfortunatly this med can cause kidney problems so I have to give him another shot to pump fluids through him so he will not get any damage. It sure doesn't sound like we are going to have much fun for the next fourteen days. We have to do this every three days. Plus she said to soak him twice a day for ten minutes and to put him in a smaller pen for awhile and keep him in the mid to high eighties until he gets better. He will have to go back in two weeks to see how he is doing. And I thought he hated me now! Just wait!!!

Antibiotics tend to dehydrate the animals pretty bady and in turn cause kidney dammage. Soak your baby in warm water too, that will help (if you dont already). Also, it may be a good idea to ask your vet about pedialyte. It definately helps with animals that are dehydrated, and there isnt much sugar in it. I dont know about torts, but i have used it on some snakes and lizards before and it has helped.
