question regarding my common snapping turtle.

Lorinda Apr 21, 2004 04:29 PM

I just addopted a common snapping turtle and I don't know much about them. I am not sure if it is male or female, I don't know how to tell them apart. My boyfriend has a Carolina Diamondback Terrapin and I will be watching him for a month and I am wondering if I can keep them both in the same tank. They are both about 6 inches long (shell length) and I have a 55 gallon tank. Please help. THANKS!!
Lorinda

thank you for letting me know.
do you happen to know how to tell males and females apart?

no you can't keep them together because the snapper will probably tear the other one apart. as for sexing them, on a male the vent is located further away from the plastron that the female which is located right next the the edge. there have been some good pictures posted awhile back that will help you.

You're going to need an adult male and an adult female for a tail comparison, males are longer and thicker.
