Robyn...I have a question about lighting

mastino177 Apr 21, 2004 05:06 PM

What's this I hear about not using these special bulbs and such? You mean that you don't spend all your money on special bulbs? I've read and have been told that you must have these or else...so is there any need for them? What about MVB bulbs. I have a very young uro and a pissy bearded dragon. Can you tell me what I should do about this problem...are there any differences, etc. They've got their basking bulbs, but I wouldn't mind spending my money on something else. Tell me what I should do. Oh, and another thing...what's up with soil thing...give me the low down on the perfect set up for both a uro and beardie...can they even be housed together?

I did type out replies to your questions, but they did not show in the post...oh well, looks like Robyn will have to get this one.

i'm not going to type out the details either

you are asking about two of the hotter debates and discussions here on the Uro forum, literally thousands of words about each topic.

i would recommend going to our site, go the FAQ, and read the Uro FAQ. it archives most all of my posts here on the Uro forum, is a good couple hours of reading, and provides a good starting base.

quickly on UVB, it is simply not needed with proper supplementation. we use regular old Home Depot, GE or Phillips Halogen Flood bulbs, 45 and sometimes 90 watts, and we use elevated basking spots to make the temperatures work for us.

Minerall I for a supplement. and lots of dirt, lots of diggable, lovable, dirt.

I more or less agree.
UVB is not needed if you take care for proper D3 supplementation-and thats easy.
So UVB can be supplemented for, but light intensity can not.
Ligtht intensities are heavily involved in the regulation of metabolig and endocrine processes. Even in humans activity of the epiphysis is regulated by light. In Uros the epiphysis istelf (aka parietal eye) is light sensitive so th eimportance of light intensities (and cycles) can´t be overstressed.
Since Uros come from habitats with extremely intense light, you should alsways go for the brightest lights available.
IMHO this means that metal halides of the HQI CDM type are a must and yu should try to exceede 30000 lux at least at the basking area (luxmeters aren´t too expensive.
