When will tail start to fatten up?

leopfan Apr 21, 2004 08:40 PM

I have about a 4 month old leo and hes only eating maybe one mealie a night. I bought some wax worms and he freekin loves em but I dont want him to get too used to them, so I do one wax worm every other night. (Only had 2 total so far) Crickets just freek me out, ONLY because the first batch he ever ate gave him parasites. Im 99 percent sure on that but there is the 1% variable. So my plan is to go through the rest of these mealies and POSSIBLY try crickets again.

After how long should I see his tail fatten up. Its really really skinny and I feel terrible.

Temps are fine moist hide daily on tile yada yada. I personally think hes just bored with a bowl of mealies.

Input welcome, thanks

Hi, You have to feed your gecko alot more than once every other night. I leave food in my two gecko's cage all the time. They always have food. I keep some meal worms in a little bowl in there and I always have crickets in there also. I am having a little problem with one of my geckos though. The body on it is thin but the tail is pretty good sized. I'm not sure whats wrong with that but you should feed it alot more than you are now. I also put some calcium dust on the food before I put it in the cage with them because I talked to a few pet store people and when they dont use the calcium dust they say that their bones get really weak and they end up dying. But the best suggestion would be to feed it alot more than you are now because at the rate you are going now its tail will never fatten up. I'm not trying to be mean or anything just don't want anything to happen to your gecko.

Here's my two geckos

You can try offering the mealworms on forceps or in a large very shallow bowl that your gecko can climb in (some leos eat more when they can climb in and stalk their prey). You could also try rotating the mealworms daily. Mealworms tend to move less when they're dehydrated so put them back in the gut load after a day in the bowl. If they're not moving, your gecko may not recognize them as food.

There are always mealies in a clear shallow glass dish all day everyday. The waxworms are every other day for treats and so he doesnt just want those and only those. I add fresh remove old and poke them prod them and all that The dish also has calc powder and vitamins in it.

Sorry I left that out. Thanks for the replies.
