Eastern Coachwhip found in the North Carolina Sandhills . . .

BlueKing Apr 21, 2004 08:41 PM

Found a female 5 foot Eastern Coachwhip today in the northernmost part of their range (just outside of Aberdeen, NC). It is mostly black, tapering to a lighter color, almost beige/white. My question is: Are they rare in North Carolina? It is the first time I've seen one in this state. Will try to get some pics of it tomorrow. Don't know much about them since I'm mainly into Kingsnakes and Indigos. But always liked other North American snakes as well, especially coachwhips. Thanks

.....I've found them in the Sandhills many times, along with Northern Pines, Corns, and Mole Kings. I found one over 6' smashed in the road near Fort Bragg one year, it had a stomach full of racerunners.

Thanks for the Info. Just moved here to NC. recently. Lived most of my life in SE. Georgia. But found MOST of my eastern coachwhips in Louisiana. Some of them were truly beautiful - half black, half light tan with large wide crossbands.
I did see a small DOR. (yearling) N. pine on the highway near Ft. Bragg though - sad loss of course.

Peace,

Zee

Believe me, if you spend enough time there, you'll be finding more Pines, they're plentiful there.
