Leo acting weird

gpmonaghan Apr 21, 2004 09:03 PM

We have a leo about six months. He's in a ten gallon tank with heat lamp by day and moonlight lamp at night. He has always just sat under his log at the warm end of the tank. Last couple of weeks he's been sitting out at the cool end, yet temps remain unchanged. Sometimes (like when we change his sand) he acts like he wants out. He's scrambling at the side of the tank and it's distressing to watch. Temps. are unchanged (late 80's early 90's...a little lower at night). Any ideas? Why would he act like he wants out?

I think geckos are similar to human in the way that after a while things get boring for us so we like change.. As long as your temperatures arent changeing then there should be no problem no matter where he is in the tank. I WOULDNT SUGGEST SAND AS A SUBTRATE. You might want to try changeing up his tank if not whats in it where everything is placed. Depending what exact light you are useing I know geckos like darkness so something bright will stress them that could be why he is now sittin on the cool side to get away from the light. Yup its difficult to watch them scratching at the side of the tank trying to get out. But its not the wild so they have no enemys just friends!

Great picture!!!

Thanks for your input. The sand we have is apparently good for geckos as it's an exceptionally fine grain. Is that still a problem?

Our concern is that the lighting hasn't changed (nothing in the tank has changed...even the location of the water dish), but gecko is sitting out...in the light even if it is down the other end of the tank. As a result he's out in the light all day which is not normal. We even put a small hide down that end and he goes in now and again mostly is sitting out in the light. Seems to be eating okay and otherwise healthy. He was just such a creature of habit for so long....under the log all day, out the minute the nightlight was put on and would sit out all night until we put the sunlight light on. It just doesn't seem normal for him to sit out. Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
