Such small snakes...

Antegy Apr 21, 2004 09:18 PM

I was just wondering, what do all of you use as a substrate in your enclosures for your kingsnakes? I have a Mexican Black Kingsnake, a very young and very small girl indeed. I use good old newspaper right now, but she always hides underneath it, even though I have plenty of hide spots setup for her in her enclosure.

Is there anything else you might recommend?

Thanks,
- Mark

I use Aspen bedding for all my snakes. It is easy to spot clean and very absorbant and the snakes like to burrow in it. I tried newspaper and paper towel and like your experience the animals would all find a way underneath and then cleaning was always a problem.

'Tigergenesis' raises a good point. I certainly wouldn't want her ingesting anything that could cause an impaction problem...

I've been keeping hatchling and adults on aspen for several years. I've NEVER had a problem with feeding.......even with hatchlings.

It's a hatchling white phase Brooksi. I'm sold out for this year, unless I get 2 clutches. I've got another pair that will be ready next year. Here's an adult pic.

thanks

Brandon-
I'd like to see a pic of the yearling brooks you have from the monster 2x het female, when you get to it.

I usually put the pinkie in a small plastic cup (those little things restaurants put salsa or condiments in). Or you could put the pinkie in an empty butter tub, the snake will crawl in and find the pinkie. Every once in a while the snake will get over-excited and drag it out over the aspen, but it usually isn't a problem.
