Black Acrylic

Icarus Apr 21, 2004 10:34 PM

I've never actually seen black acrylic, but I've got a great idea for an all acrylic cage, part black and part clear. Does the black acrylic bind as readily to the clear acrylic? Any pictures of successful cages? Or really.. any advice from people who've done this... Thanks alot.

I'm wondering if coco panels will stick to acylic, becuase I've got the impression that silicone does not adhere super well to acrylic panels - so what other options are there?

Oogieboogie has shown several pictures of an acrylic cage he built with a black back. To my understanding he solvent welded the two different colors together. You should not have to go back for than a few pages to find his posts.

I'm racking my brain trying to remember if I have ever used silicone on acrylic. I would assume it would work but can't tell you with any certainty that it will.

Hot glue, on the other hand, will stick quite nicely.

Thanks chris,

I think I found the cage you were talking about (copyright oogieboogie), quite nice. I posted the link on this post to make sure... If oogieboogie's around - can standard acrylic sealant be used between the clear and black acrylic, or do they have too/two different structures? (Oh Shakespeare... you thought you mastered the pun..)

I believe there's a more recent picture as well. Also, he has e-mailed me through my name link so I'm sure he would not mind the same from you.

I think it's a fantastic design for species that do well in this type of cage. I love how the black back and wooden top/bottom "frame" the viewing area.

Keep in mind that acrylic is susceptible to warping when exposed to thermal gradiants. As such it does not work for all species.
