2% Piebald Or Super Ringer?

RoyalConstrictor Apr 22, 2004 10:08 AM

What do you guys think about that ad in the Classifieds? The snake has a small white spot near the tail. I've seen some Pied's that have little white like that and they look similar. The smudging of the pattern above the white also makes it look like a pied. But at $1500.. too good to be true?

Most true piebalds I've seen have a jumbled pattern - i.e. the places they do have patterning is very different from a normal. Take a look at some pics of them and you'll see the difference.

I'm going to vote for ringer on that one, too.

Doing some surfing around the net, I can see a lot of people are mistaking ringers in their collection to be Pieds. This might also lead to people buying ringers thinking they are piebalds.

Don't know about the one in question but it seems that het pieds vary from completely normal looking to possibly ringers and maybe even low white pieds. Someone posted a het last year that could be taken for a low white pied. In some cases pied looks to be a near co-dominant gene if you buy into the sporadic visible het thing.

Here is a baby I produced last year from a 50% chance het pied male that I feel is a het based on the belly sign in him and about half of his offspring. Unfortunately this one was a male as it would have been fun to watch grow up. I realize he wasn't even that good of a ringer but I can't help wonder if he was just a chance ringer or if it had something to do with what I think was his likely het pied gene (only 25% chance on paper but his belly sure looked it).

I'm not saying that all ringers are het pieds, I'm just still trying to get a feel for if ringers are more likely in het pieds.

Super I don't envy the pastel breeders having to distinguish between the best pastels and the worse super pastels. Maybe there might even be some cases where pied breeders will have trouble distinguishing between the best het pieds and the worst homozygous ones.
