Long tailed lizard info needed

twila Apr 22, 2004 10:09 AM

I have 2 long tailed lizards. I can find next to nothing on them.

Can somebody point me to a site or book that will have information on them?

Or can somebody tell me how to tell the sexes apart. My 2 are very different in colouring. One is muted in colour and the other is rather vibrant. With yellow black and brown.

the muted one spends alot of time hiding in a log. I'm wondering if there maybe youngins afoot.

ANy and all help is MUCHLY appreciated

Hi twila.

Long tailed grass lizards are neat little animals, arent they? They come from asia, at least most species do, im not aware of any other place they would be from. They like it a bit on the cooler side...maybe 75*f on the cooler end of the tank...possibly downt o 70*. in the basking area i would keep a UTH and a basking spot, keeping the hot spot no more than 83*. Thye also need a cool down at night, so just let the UTH stay on. UVB light would never hurt, since they are diurnal, but like any other lizards like that (ie anoles) alot of people dont beleive that they need it. Make sure they get enough D3 in their diet if they dont have natural light. CAlcuim too (obviously). High humidity seems to be detrimental to them so i would keep it below 50%. As their name implies, they like to dwell in long grasses, using their prehensile tails to balance. They eat small insects such as pinhead crickets, fruit flies, baby mealies etc. They have also been know to consume nectar and baby food. Stick to peaches and apricots mainly. dont forget to dust with calcium. Males and females can be distinguished by males having hemipenal bulges...fairly large ones like cresties do. Females, on the other hand, lack these. Thats about all i can offer. I hope this helps!

I've purchased a UVA/UVB light (2.2) I have an red light for night (my house gets very cold at night) and a heat lamp.

I'm not sure about those body parts you mentioned. I'm incredibly new and green when it comes to lizards! Also, I don't handle them. They don't seem to like it and I don't want to cause undo stress. We like to watch them. Their aquarium
is nice to look at. Kind of like watching fish! lol

There are no colour differences between males and females?

I was told by the petstore to keep the humidity at 70%. I've read they like it less and read that they like it at 70%

I read nothing about them liking baby food! Will have to try that.
