HELP, HELP - Need to get rid of slugs !!!

Marcin May 13, 2003 06:39 AM

Hi,
Does anyone know how to get rid of slugs, without harming the frogs? I got a bunch of pretty expensive, non hybrid, miniature orchids and I found one of them with almost completely chewed up air roots!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Slugs are attracted to beer. Therefore, if you use a small container of beer with a hole that is large enough for the slugs to crawl into, but too small for the frogs to crawl into, you should be able to get rid of the slugs without hurting your frogs. Just check your traps once each day and empty out the slugs. I've used this trick in my gardens, but never in my tanks.

Good luck,

Homer

I had the same problem for a while in my cobalt viv. They were really small, but every morning I'd wake up to a bunch of them on my pinkquill brom. I put a slice of orange in the tank, and that seemed to attract most of them. I, however, like Homer's idea, BEER and dart frogs.....wow, does it get any better?!

I'm sorry about the slugs!!! How irritating. The beer works. The containers that are sold for the garden usually have a cover so that sprinklers or rain does not dilute the beer. There usually are holes or space for the slugs or snails to climb into and drown. You might have to make a smaller version for the tank. But this should be easy for you Marcin, with all that you are capable of.

May I ask. What type of orchids did you get? Do you have pictures, how long have you had them in your tank, and how are they doing beside the slug issue?

Thanks!
