A few shots from last week's southern Illinois trip

haddachoose1 Apr 22, 2004 03:13 PM

Here's a Union Co. black racer having some lunch.

A juvenile cottonmouth in a classic pose.

A large cottonmouth (pushing 4').

A timber rattlesnake beating a retreat.

We found lots of marbled salamanders in Johnson Co.

The taillights of a northern fence lizard.

And lots and lots of Blanchard's cricket frogs.

Thanks for looking.

It was good to get out of hibernation. It won't be long until those milksnakes start coming out up there.

Yeah, I haven't been able to get away from work much. Last weekend I went down to se. MI to see one of my herpin' buds. We found a slew of sallys and a couple blue racers, turtles, etc. It was a fun weekend.

I haven't had time to post pics, yet, and tonight I'm heading for OH. Working on a Butler's garter snake project with poss. massas. Milks won't be out up here for about three more weeks. It'll be interesting to see how many inhabit our property with our new improvements.

Shoot me an email if you get a chance.

Great pictures Tim. I've only just started visiting this forum and I'm amazed how many midwest and specifically Illinois herpers are on here. That other forum hardly has any. No arguments over east coast vs. west coast here. lol I STILL haven't madee it down to Shawnee yet. I'm getting real antsy. I did make it out to a Lake near my house to watch (and join in) the bufos breeding. I love how they try to amplex your hands. lol Finding baby garters in my yard but otherwise haven't seen a snake since all the Massasaugas at the end of March.

Thanks Martin. I read and enjoy your posts. You put a lot into it. Actually, I live in Wisconsin, and as soon as it warms up a bit more, most of my reports will be from around here. Shawnee Hills is a great area. There is a lot more there than just the "Snake Road". I can't wait to go back to do some more exploring.

Wish I could join you guys, but it's real hard to get away from here at this time of year. I live in Michigan. Have seen some stuff here the past couple weeks though and will post some pics as soon as I can free up some more time. Will be working on the Butler's garter snake project in May, and may be traveling in June some. Keep up the good work guys..love your pics, especially the massas, garters, milks, etc.
