fruit fly hydei or melangastor for large mantellas and reed frogs

pitcherplant7 Apr 22, 2004 03:14 PM

Can larger mantellas like betsileo accept D. melangastor fruit flies? OR do they take hydei more readily?

And what about reed frogs? Do they take melangastor? I know they can take hydei, but whether or not they'd be more interested in the smaller ones I don't know.

Thanks

mantellas will consume both melanogaster and hydei. Some breeders feed a mixture of the two fruitflies to give the most variety. Some people just use melanogaster as they tend to reproduce more quickly than hydei.

I personally think that adult reed frogs (Hyperolius) need a larger prey item than either species of fruit fly. I tended to use large 10 day old to small 14 day old crickets to feed Hyperolius with the occasional addition of fruitflies.

My 2 cents.

another food they love is small spiders...now that spring is here they're starting to pop up...i feed them to my tincs and mantellas (expectata)...grab the egg sacks too...they don't always hatch but sometimes you get lucky...and it's free food.
