Need a little help....Mali weight problem....

-ryan- Apr 22, 2004 04:00 PM

my mali uro has had an awful weight problem since I rescued her. She has gone down in weight, but still very fat. I think part of the problem is that I don't have a very big tank. I've just got a 48"x13"x14" tank I picked up used for her soon after I got her. I was going to save for a bigger tank for her, but yesterday was my bearded dragon's long awaited vet visit that cost all of my money (they had to give him a check up, check his fecals, give him an injection for a parasite...I think it was strongolli or something like that...this is the second attempt to get rid of it, and do blood work because I am concerned about his kidneys since I can't seem to wean him onto veggies). Plus, this morning my uro's powersun bulb blew. I just got it in january! I'm going to stick to strip UV lights from now on.

Anyways, should I have her out running around more or something? Currently she gets about 15-25 minutes of out time. Maybe put her on a diet? Instead of basically all she can eat? That seems like a good idea, though when she doesn't eat enough, she usually tries to eat basically whatever she can fit in her mouth.

Thanks in advance. Other than being fat, she is active (more so outside of the cage, but she does like to run back and forth inside) and eats and poos like a champ.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but sounds to me like all is good. Fat, eating, and active are all things I look for. Bigger cage is definately a good thing. MAke sure there's a good gradient of temps. We don't want her too hot all the time.

I also have a "hefty" Mali that was given to me. I pretty much mostly feed him greens with supplements, and limit the vegies and dry beans and seeds. Even so, he has managed to gain more weight! But he is very active and healthy, so... I just keep up on his current diet. Wish the Uro's I paid so much money for would be as healthy!!!
