Advice/opinions please - green anole given to me...

Traci Jun 14, 2003 11:04 PM

Hi, I feel horrible about this, but tonight I found out that my sister took her daughter to a carnival and at one of the games you could win an anole. I think that is just horrible that they would give anoles away as prizes! But anyway my niece played the game and won one. My sister knows that I have corn snakes and a leopard gecko, so she brought it here. She said it was either that or turn it loose. I did NOT want her to turn it loose (they don't exist up here in PA in the wild) however I cannot keep the anole (my husband said NO!!)I don't even have the right cage or supplies to set it up properly and my husband does not want me to spend money on it. It's in one of those plastic kritter keepers right now. I did mist it with water and it lapped some up off the walls. I also gave it three baby superworms (they are tiny little things) dusted with vit/calcium and it enthusiastically ate. I'm going to try to call a local reptile shop tomorrow but I don't know if they will be open. Other than that I don't know what to do. I know they are often thought of as feeders not pets, but I don't want the poor little guy/girl to end up as a feeder if at all possible. I don't REALLY want to take it to PetCo but if the reptile shop isn't open tomorrow what else can I do. I'd hate for it to get sick or perish here in my home due to lack of proper caging, lighting, etc (which I'm not allowed to buy!) I guess I'm just looking for some support and advice. I love animals. Thank you!

I feel bad for you . Any ways are you sure you dont want to just ue like 30 or 40 bucks?? for him/her??

I mean come on!! All you need is a UVB light(so no bone disease) plus a heating light day/night about 50-60 watts. Paper towel as substrate b/c you don't want to use money. Paper towel is best anyways ^^ b/c no chance of compaction. some climbing branches (FROM OUTSIDE) and mabye some fake plants u dont have to but (ur pick). BUT REMEMBER PLZ BAKE THE BRANCHES U GET FROM OUTSIDE OR MITES WILL KILL UR ANOLE!!!!!! Of course u probably kno but just to remind u hehe. And plus a bowl with water just for backup b/c when i forget to spray my anoles they get water from bowls cute huh??
They kno b/c when the light hits the water it makes the bright reflection!! Thats how they kno where the water droplets is.
And thats pretty much it. now your price has gone down to about to 15-25 bucks. b/c most of it is free or is in your house!!

EIGHH but i have no solution for if u stil cant use a bit of money just try ok?? COOL

Thx Peace

AHH POO!!! I almost forgot you can feed bugs from out side such as MOTHS,MOSQUITOS(THE MALES ONES)WHICH IS THE BIG ONES,SPIDERS 9NOT BIG OR POISONUS ONES OF COURSE),OR JUST CATCH CRICKETS TO. But none of them has to be from pesticide free places. Of course u kno that too just to remind u heh.

Or if u can use some money sometimes buy small crickets and dust them no mealies or superworms. Mabye sometimes or they will die of compaction b/c of hard out skin. You can gut load them or dust them . of course you can dust all of they bug in the first paragraph.

Thx!! I hope I helped you.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply to my post. I was able to take the little guy to a local reptile shop. They have a good customer who keeps anoles. In fact they told me he keeps them outside on a climbing type shrub and throws crickets into it for them. When it starts to get cold he brings them inside. I think that is a great life for the little anoles. No cage for part of the year, real sunlight, and not only do they get crickets but whatever wild bugs they can catch!

Thanks again!!
