Male bites the female

Newearth Apr 22, 2004 04:30 PM

I have a 6' male Bullsnake and a 5' female who I have bred from for the last couple of years with no problems. This year I was given another female about the same size as the first female.
When I introduced the new female to my male he imediatly senced her in his 3' x2' x 2' viv and began to chase her in the usual way. Then he started biting her and grabbing the body of the femal. Things began to get rough so I seperated them. Is this normal and just something I have not noticed before or is is possible the other snake is a male and they were fighting.

Cheers John

that sounds pretty normal. with my snakes it happened sometimes. especially my cal kings, but i have had a few pituophis do just that. since he has no limbs he is improvising with his mouth. i would not worry about it. did they successfully mate? if not all you can do is try again. i saw some wild bulls mating a few days ago and the male was going nuts on the poor litle gal but i am sure she is fine and well on her way to prodcing a new generation of young! good luck!!

Thanks Max,
I have been breeding Bullsnakes for four years now and this is the first time I have seen this bitting.
I have put them back together today , the male was chasing her all over and started bitting her again as there seemed to be littlle if any damage done I have left them alone and will keep an eye on them.

Regards John
