i am thinking of using an old rabbit cage/hutch as an outdoor house, since it's predator-proof and is something i already have that i can work with, plus junior's still such a little guy that 2 by 3 feet should be ok for now.

the floor, though, is wire mesh, and below that is a metal tray. i'm thinking of filling the metal tray with soil up to the mesh floor, then putting sod on top of that. any thoughts? and what do i need to look out for as far as soil additives that can be dangerous?

also, does anyone use any kind of mister type things? i was wondering about one of those to keep things humid and a bit cooler in the height of the day.

A friend who raises radiates uses a cage, he takes out the bottom (there's cage wire all the way around) and just sits it on the ground. The weeds and grass come up through the wire. Though if any type of chemical fertilizer or pesticide has been used on the lawn, it is probably best not to use this method.

hey i recently built a turtle pen for a couple boxies and i used this organic type of dirt that was made by worms and it still had worm caps in it
i just wanted to tell you about it because it was a really good buy same price as the other bagged soils and also it is very good for them to dig in it cost me only about 15 dollars to line my 3 feet by 6 feet pen so something like that would be the best in my opinion
also if you have an extra 100 bucks it would be worth your while to just make a big pen from scratch then you can use it forever and not worry about your torts getting too big
