She Criscoed her corn!

zooguy Apr 22, 2004 06:59 PM

Okay, I know someone that recently discovered that her corn had mites. She called the pet store where the snake was purchased, and they told her to put Crisco on her corn once a day(I don't know how many days she did this). She then just let the Crisco rub off in the cage. She said that it worked! I'm just wondering how humane that was! I know that if I were a snake and someone lubed me up with Crisco, I'd give 'em a good hard bite! I don't know, I've never dealt with mites (knock on wood), but maybe this is a well known solution? Thoughts anyone?

to help loosen the tail tip of a bad shed... but i washed it off myself to make sure this kind of material wasn't going back into the cage, or into a water bowl that the snake might drink from etc. -- it worked great to loosen up the bad shed, and was told that it wouldn't harm the snake and it was to the point where this snake was going to end up losing the end of it's tail where the skin had constricted if something wasn't done. i would never cover a snake in it though, i used about one droplet, only on the tail, just my opinion

Crisco doesnt kill eggs, crisco or oil can make your snake loose scales. For 20 smackers and shipping you can get a can of Black Knight.I havent heard a bad word about it yet.You can also safetly use sevin dust 5% you can buy from any lawn and garden center....Paul

I used veggie oil on my jungle carpet to get the mites. Soaking the snake in water won't do the trick but the oil will get under the scales to drown the mites. Worked great. Then I just 'bathed' my snake under the faucet to rinse her off and pick off the dead mites. She was a real trooper with the whole ordeal.

I've also heard that using crisco can be harmful or damaging to a snake. I had one case of mites recently that I had to deal with for the first time in 10 years of keeping herps. I followed the directions of some friends and it worked out great.

I soaked the new quarantined snake (which was a argentine boa) in a mild soapy water solution for about 1-2 hours in a 5gal bucket. The soapy water will help to break down the mites exoskeleton. Meanwhile, I sprayed her entire enclosure (and I mean everything) with Provent-a-Mite. This stuff is harmful to snakes in its gasous or liquid form, but okay if you allow it to dry, which happens while the snake is taking a bath.

I even found mites under the inside lip of the water bowl so I even sprayed under there. The only place I did not spray, was in the water bowl itself for obvious reasons.

After the Provent-a-Mite dried and the snake has soaked, I removed the snake from the 5gallon bucket and sprayed a papertowel with stuff called Reptile Relief which I then rubbed onto the snake. I bought the provent-a-mite & repti-relief from Big Apple herp and it arrived fast. It was well worth the cost since I have not seen a single mite in 4 weeks since after this method of treatment.

Using oil can be harmful and cause actual scales to slough or fall off, which looks gross from pics I've seen.

BLACK KNIGHT...I have been told works well BUT is NOT AVAILABLE due to a law suit possibly involving the toxic effect of one of its ingredients (but I'm not totally positive). Someone told me that the company has a whole warehouse full of the stuff since the company did not stop production right away when their legal troubles hit.

Tell your friend good luck!

Let me guess it's toxic to people.I will stop reccomending it to people bro.Sevin dust 5% might be messy but it does one heck of a number on mites and one can will last most hobbiest a lifetime...Paul
