I recently spent a couple days herping around the Roanoke and Martinsville area but had a rather difficult time finding snakes. I'm used to hunting abandoned buildings,tin piles, etc, and did not see many of either.
I found 2 garters, 2 waternsakes, and numerous salamanders. I was really hoping to find some kings,black rats, or venomous. I'm not really looking to collect the animals although a real nice getula may tempt me. Just looking for photos more then anything.
