Got 2 red ackies....and some questions....

reps-r-us Apr 22, 2004 07:55 PM

Hi,

I have always admired red ackies, and last week I had the chance of purchasing not only one, but two...

They are about 4 to 5 inches snout to vent, and quite the funny little monitors. They eat VERY well on crickets (almost adult crickets) but ignore anything else...

How do I get them to eat worms or anything other? I offered super and silkworms, but they just ignored them.

They are very active and personable, what great montiors they are!

I didn't plan on getting any that day at the show, but they were offered at $250 for both incl. a new screen cage (which sold for $50). Right away I knew that price was incredible and the only reason they weren't snatched up because the show was so small and not many people realized what they were....not to mention they were hard to see in the screen cage.

I ended up getting both for $200 incl. the cage. I kept thinking, to good to be true, but they are doing incredible well.

I moved them into a tank with dirt substrate to dig in, and some wood to climb on with a nice basking spot as well. Temps are nice and high.

I guess my only concern at this time is how to introduce a more varied diet. I guess I could just keep trying...lol.

at that price there probably a more orange yellow....crickets are fine dont sweat it just dust them w/ a good supplement. Wait till they get a little bigger before introducing mice. Ackies are great!

thank you for the reply...

They are most certainly "red" ackies, I know I got a very good deal.

At that age they are still very fast and slick little critters, but I will try to get some pictures.

They definitaly got personality plus!

Should have pictures up later today...

Don't worry about it much now. As long as they are eating their dusted crickets well and are active, a varied diet can come along later. I just got two reds also, and you got an incredible deal. Mine are really small, around 6" stl. My adults eat lots of different food, so I did put a tiny bit of the szd in the babies cage the other day and they ate it. Good luck!
