Substrate suggestions

aps929 Apr 22, 2004 09:47 PM

I know this is one of those questions that regulars to forums hate seeing over and over so I apologize. I don't hang out much on the gecko forum.
My girlfriend has a pair of leopards that she keeps on paper towels. The towels don't mask oder very well and when you need to clean the cage you have to take everything out. What's a good substrate that's easy to spot clean?

I use slate tiles in some of my tanks. When one gets messy, you can just pick that one up, and clean it, without removing everything. The only time ive had to remove every tile is to take out mealworms. But other than that, they've worked well. Not to mention how well they hold heat. I turn them over so that I have the bumpy surface facing up, which makes it seem a bit more natural, and the geckos have something to grasp.

Like Crystal i use tiles in my tanks. What i also do is to place some papertowels where the *bathroom* area is. This way i can change them when needed without removing all of the decor.

In order to get all of my girls (5 in the top 40 gal and 4 in the bottom 40 gal tank) to poop in one spot, i place their poop where i want them to go and they usually follow suit.

I've got a pic of my bottom 40 gal posted a bit further down the page under the post *My 2nd 40 gal setup*. The bathroom area is to the very left front of the tank.

You place their poop where you want them to go?
This is comical to me, sorry.
So you just scoop up some poop and put it in one corner and they tend to follow?

Dealing with ummmmmm poop is nothing new to me (i'm a psw) so ya, funny as it is, they will learn to go where i want them to using this technique. Its not like i pick up the poop with my hands though.....i usually use a scooper and when dealing with any sort of bodily fluids i always wear gloves LOL...

Having them all poop in the same area does make cleanup alot more easy.

Continue using paper towels. I had my leo for several years and never have I used any substrate other than paper towel.

LEOS have a wonderful sense of doing their duty at the same place everyday. At that area I use a piece of toilet paper. The paper towel does not cover that area I put the toilet paper on.

The leo will poo at the same place. Simply remove the soiled toilet paper and replace--takes only seconds.

My concern is the odor--LEO POO SHOULD NOT BE ODOROUS. I highly suspect your leo has internal parasites such as coccida or other. PLEASE, please please take a fresh sample of leo poo to your vet and get it examined before the leo becomes symptomatic. If you don't get it examined, it may die a very slow horrible death, which is considerably painful.

I hadn't realized it was supposed to not stink. Maybe I should get it checked out because the whole cage stinks with just one poop.
The don't seem to go in the same place everyday either. They seem to like to go all over the cage.
I'll see if I can get an appointment next week. Thanks for your advice.
