ATTENTION all Central Florida beardie lovers!

beginnersbasics Apr 22, 2004 09:51 PM

I have had 3 babies stolen in the past couple days.

Because I have several clutches here right now, my tanks and tubs are kinda full. Well, I didn't notice for a couple days, but when I did a head count on Tuesday I was missing ONE 1 week old dragon. I checked again today and I am now missing THREE 1 week old dragons.

My problem is I am "regular as clockwork" so to speak about the times I am out of my house getting the kids from school. Someone has noticed this and has taken advantage of it. They are pretty darn smart too..... Don't take a bunch at once, nooooooo that would be noticed LOL Take them a couple at a time. Problem is they took all three from the same clutch and happen to be some of my screaming orange babies!

Now, a warning if your in the central Florida area. Lock your doors and do a head count if you have hatchlings.

Also.......... If anyone in this area is appraoched by someone trying to sell young ORANGE dragons, please contact me ASAP!

No, they have not escaped or been eaten by an adult, etc. I KNOW someone has been in my house because "things" have been disturbed.

I am setting up a cam to try and catch whoever it is. I am hoping it is only one of the local kids and they will get smart and bring them back. 1 week old dragons are not something that an inexperienced "kid" will know how to care for properly.

This is insane.

Do you have any idea how they are getting into the house? Do you have an alarm system?

Yes Kephy, I know how they are getting in. I HAD (fixed it last night) one door that was warped due to water damaged and it wouldn't lock correctly most times. My alarm system is my inbred dog and my 22 rifle LOL

if you are going to hide a camera you should not post it here somebody might see the post. Is that a pic of one of them. If so why don't you e-mail me and give me a quote on a baby or two.

Yes, that is a picture of one of them. It was taken when they were about 3 days old.

Lisa,
That is SUCH a bummer!!!
I would be torn between fixing the door and letting it be, so you could catch the beardie burgler on camera. At least that way, you have a chance at getting them back.

Hmmm, I wonder if that's covered bt your insurance??

big mistake. some carriers will drop you immediately. there are a lot of ignorant people with a lot of misconceptions about reptiles. many insurance companies think your lizard or snake or turtle will be venomous or escape and kill some little kid. Stupid ? yes, Sad? yes but TRUE

I never mentioned mine on my homeowners ins...but How Stupid!!!
I can see it now, 20" beardie eats neighbors half wolf, half huskie, scary looking dog!!!!

I was thinking since it IS her business that it may make a diff, No?
What if, especially in your case Bennet, you lost all those Visions and beardies in (God Forbid) a fire? Not insured? Now THAT would suck!!

Besides the fact that most insurance companies have hissey fits over people owning reptiles in their homes, if you use those reptiles in a business venture they will not cover any loss under homeowners. You need a business policy for that. that opens more problems with zoning and of course you need all the proper papers from fish & game. It is a catch 22 situation for a lot of people especially in south florida. since Hurricane Andrew, all insurance here has been rediculous. In order for me to get insurance we had to go to loyds of london! Yes that sucks! Most people dont realize how people in this business are discriminated against.

The problem is ignorance. Insurance companies won't take the time to do actuarial work required to create a class of business that deals with reptiles. I think the problem has been a lack of need for this type of insurance. I can't imagine the risk would be as high as a lot of classes of business but the research just hasn't been done yet. I would bet in the near future there is an insurance company that will put some time into creating a policy for such a business.

But yeah, keep it zipped for sure!!!

I am sooo sorry. My beardie stays at school Mon. throught Fri. He comes home with me on weekends, holidays and the summer. I will keep you informed if I see anything. There was an article in our paper that someone stole a classroom iguana. The school security offer had an informant tell him it was placed in a sewer for 3 days.He climbed in the sewer, rescued it and found it had suffered cuts among other things. They took it to a vets. What a sick group of people. What a brave police officer.
