ff cultures drying out....

msaomaha Apr 22, 2004 09:56 PM

Hi,
I just started some ff cultures about a week and a half ago, I used the corn meal, agar, molasses mix from Reptiles magazine.
They were working great for about a week but now they are starting to dry out... Could i mist these or would they mold too easily, could i put them in a rubbermaid with higher humidity?
thanks,

MS

Hi, I had a problem with my media drying out at first. I use the media that places sale online cause allot of folks agree you get better results from it for some reason. I figured when i made my media i would just mix it up and throw some flies in set it some where and couple days later some times 5 days it would dry up and i woudl get white mold. I found out that if i mix it and let it sit for a couple mins then add more water and let it sit and add more water one last time i havn't had any media dry out for me after a month and flies are doing great in the media.

If the media dries up, spray it with water. IT will soak it right up. Just make sure there isn't standing water on the ground otherwise all of your flies will drown.
