Is it necessary for spotted turtles to hibernate in captivity? I am thinking about purchasing some and I really like clemmys guttata, but I dont want to have to hibernate them. Does anyone not hibernate their spotteds?

To answer your question - no it is not necessary to hibernate spotteds. A cool-down period is usually sufficient. There is no reason you couldn't hibernate one though, and at least somewhat of a cool-down period should be provided if you intend to breed. Your best bet is def to purchase a CB hatchling.

I have never hibernated my spotties. I keep the daylight down to about 7 hours a day and the temp at about 68 degrees for about six weeks. Keep a close eye on them for skin infections and respitory infections, this is why I dont lower the temp too much. I warm them to about 84 degrees in the spring. They breed yearly and some double clutch . I do know of people who do hibernate their spotties but I dont think its nessary.
