Problem feeder (kind of)....

Amanda E May 13, 2003 07:13 AM

Hi.

I've never had any problems getting my oldest snake to eat, even when he was going nuts the past few months trying to get out to find a mate.

Now, however, when I try to feed him he will only take 1 hopper compared to the 3 hoppers he would normally eat.

Is this most likely just because he onlys wants to eat one mouse rather than a bunch and I should give him a larger mouse to make sure he is getting enough food? Or should I take it that he isn't really hungry and even if I switched to larger mice he wouldn't even be interested in even 1 mouse, because he would see it as too much food?

If you understand what I mean, please give me your opinions on this matter.

I do have larger mice to feed him, but I still have about 50 hoppers to feed off and none of my other snakes are anywhere near to being able to eat a hopper.

Amanda,
It sounds like your snake is healthy and well-fed in general.
Am I right? I would not worry. Instead of thawing 3, I would thaw 1 for the next few feedings. Then try 2, and see if he wants the second. I think that us snake owners sometimes want to see our animals eat as much as possible, when their needs are probably less. My males are often not hungry when I think they "should" be. I just don't worry about it, as they are obviously quite healthy. If you think he is not getting enough: sure, try a bigger size prey (when they are eating 3 of one size they can certainly handle the next size up). But I would use up those hoppers first, being the frugal guy I am. Good luck.
