Cleaning driftwood

destarr Apr 23, 2004 12:01 AM

I have two pieces of driftwood that I am wanting to use, but I'm not sure how to prepare them for the terrarium. The pieces have some loose stuff on them and I need to know the fastest, best way to clean off the loose stuff, and prepare the driftwood for the tank. I have read on how to continually dunk the driftwood in hot water, but I wondered about 2 other methods I had scarcely heard about. First, I have heard that one can place the wood, after a soak, in the oven to kill any bacteria on the wood. Second, I have heard that you can sandblast the wood to clean off the loose stuff and to give the wood a uniform color, as much of the wood sold in stores has. Is there any truth to these rumors?

dont know about sandbalsting, The other 2 methods involve bleach and heat.

Soak the wood in a 5% bleach solution overnight then wash and let stand until the bleach smell is gone (a few days).

Bake in an oven at 250F for 2 hrs.
