Breeding Het Pied to normals

Just a quick question. What will i get if i breed a Het pied to a normal, and how long before i'd get myself a pied? Thanks to anyone who answers!

breeding a het pied to a normal would result in a litter of approximately half het pied, half normal, with no way of telling them apart you would call them 50% het pieds.

then you would want to raise up all the females (2-3 years) and if your lucky you will get a pied when bred back to the het pied male

Assuming you have a male breeding this upcoming season it would shake down like this.......

If you start cooling your females in November 2004.....and start breeding your 100% het male to normal females you will hatch out 50% possible hets in April-June 2005.

You keep all your 50% het females and raise them up 1.5 years. By 2005 May thru Dec you should be able to hit 600-900 grams on these animals on average. In 2006 Jan thru Nov you should be able to get them to the 1300-1800 gram area on average. Obviously there are exception to the above numbers. Most should be able to be cooled down in Nov/Dec 2006.

So in 2006/2007 you will be breeding the 100% father to his 50% possible daughters. So in 2007 April-June you will hatch 100% het X Normal and 100% het X 100% het. You will have a 25% chance for a visible pied with the girls that prove out to be 100% het pied. However, if you don't get a pied....that doesn't necessarily mean the female isn't 100% het. So you keep her and her females marked as 50% possibles and try to prove her out the following year.

If you get a visual pied in the clutch you know the mother is a 100% het pied and all the normal looking clutch mates to the pied are 66% het for pied (100% het X 100% het = 25% normal 50% het 25% home).

One disclaimer.....with ball pythons there are know sure thing forcasts. These are just general assumptions....plan for the low end....not for the optimal outcome.

Hope this helps,
