For the yellow lovers

eunectes4 Apr 23, 2004 02:41 AM

It's about 2:30 a.m. and I have not seen any new posts to read or respond to. My girlfriend is asleep and my new little ATB is working down a pinkie mouse. I was just thinking of all the yellow anaconda owners in here...dfr, eric, you all know who you are. Well, i never have much to offer to you all and that makes me sad: ( So I just thought I would post this little pic I took with my cell phone at the sepent safari over the summer. It is a very pretty yellow that I hope you all enjoy. Oh and to dfr..I hope you read my post on the designer snakes...I'm curious to what you have to say about that..And I do not want many harsh feelings from that or wrong ideas...I respect all breeders (except those jackasses that sterilize snakes they sell to capitalize on a gene)who get in and make money on the new fads early and I respect the people who just enjoy animals for what they are. For us Anaconda people...we just don't need the designer stuff because our snakes carry a level of awe and mystery all on their own. We don't need a piebald. If we showed that to our neighbors and friends we can't educate and say that this is what an anaconda looks like if it has white stripes all over it...but there is really no lines like humans tend to make, the categories we put things into ...there is not regular, designer, and a thin line of grey...rather a full spectrum of selective breeding where we all have our own level of tolerance and likes and dislikes. Now that I got all poetic I hope you all enjoy this picture of a normal yellow anaconda.

Nice snake.
Mine had a feeding accident yesterday. I was positioning the rabbit inside the cage to hit it and kill it to try her first p/k rabbit. She came at it while I bent over to grab the club. She struck it but let go quickly. The rabbit had a broken leg after that. I then killed it and tried to taunt her with it while she was in the water tub. She just came right up to the head and sniffed around then went back into the water. I left the rabbit hanging over the edge of the water tub and left the room for awhile. No luck.
Since my girlfriend has a rule about frozen rabbits in the freezer I had to throw it away.
The rabbit was rather large for her. I'm going to give her a week or so and try a smaller rabbit.(killed before placing in the cage). Or should I stick with live ones for awhile more?
Any other suggestions?
There now you all have something to post to. lol

Why don't you leave the pk rabbit in over night and see if it dissapears? I would think that is worth a shot. Try knocking it out instead of killing it...it is safer and should induce the same feeding response if the rabbit has a pulse. I feed live because twice now I have gotten ft mice from a well known pet store and they have had the guts come out in a soupy mess and the snake has busted the mouse all over when she bit making a huge mess...sometimes they just start bleeding when i thaw them out and are nasty so I just leave those rotten fts alone...no problems with pinkies or fuzzies though, just adult mice (no I do not thaw them in the microwave if anyone got that idea...I usually bag them and put them in hot water or i let them thaw under a lamp)...I also cannot kill anything expecially a rabbit so what i do is watch my snakes when they eat and if the mouse gets into a position to where they could possibly bite my snake, I put a pen or something in its mouth and push its head back until the snake is done with its work. I have never had any problems with this method because I am a sneaky ninja and can do this without the snake noticing.

Oh ya...my green anaconda does not eat live anything though...just chicken parts...has eaten live garter snakes though..never tried a ft garter.

I breed my own rats for now, so fresh is never a issue. I dont mind the killing part, I use a pillow case and a swift thump on the floor. I refuse to put anything even twitching in with my snakes. I dont want them to look wild caught (all scared up). As far as prsenting the prekilled I simply place the food item 10-12 inches from the snake, or hang it over water bowl. and the snake comes and gets it. If your pet store sells prekilled rodents, chances are that they have no problem killing one for you.---Eric---

` This is not my picture. I collected it somewhere on the web, maybe here at Kingsnake.
` After years in pet retail, I have seen many snakes like this , in person. And not all Ball Pythons, many Boids, and Colubrids.
` In this case, it's not just kill the predator. It's have a little nosh, too.

Leaving live rodents is extremely dangerous. That would not happen if the perswon was watching the whole time. I have something ready to put in the rodents mouth from the second I drop it in and I carefully watch the position and if it looks "iffy" I put something it its mouth and move the head away. my snakes are all flawless. Now with rats i am a little more hesitant. I have not had any problems with nasty ft rats so I use them..not to mention I like rats and I don't like to put live ones in against a snake and I cannot kill them myself. Rats are much smarter and much more capable of damage than mice are. most mice bites cannot even reach through the scales of the snakes you are feeding them too. Rats can take out half a snake in a bite. I like ft pinkines, fuzzies, and even rats...petco will not kill a rodent for you. But those nasty ft mice are not worth my time after my experiences...i would be worried my snake got sick from the soupy mess of liquified mouse insides. DFR...did you read the selective breeding post down by the albino?

` I did read it. It deserves a longer answer than I have the time to write, at the moment. I hope to get to it early this evening, PDT.

I think I'm just going to stay with a live smaller rabbit next time. I, like you, have never had a problem with it because my green ususlly takes them out with no problem. I think she wasn't ready for the fight that this larger rabbit put up. Thanks for the post. I'll keep you posted.
